Andersonville Psychedelic Therapy
As research on the mental health benefits of psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy becomes more mainstream, I get more and more questions about Andersonville psychedelic therapy and whether I provide it. While I do not offer Ketamine-assisted therapy, I also offer harm reduction-focused services to decrease your risks, including psychoeducation and psychedelic integration therapy, to help you make sense of your experience.
Grow with Flo Counseling does not encourage the use of illegal substances and cannot facilitate therapeutic sessions while you are under the influence of illegal or unprescribed substances, nor does Grow with Flo Counseling encourage the finding, purchasing, or use of illegal substances.
Why Is the Discussion of Psychedelic Therapy Becoming So Common?
In the last decade or so, the use of psychedelics in a clinical therapeutic setting has become increasingly common as research is showing us undeniable benefits for individuals suffering from treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions, especially when they are used in conjunction with psychotherapy.
What Are the Legal and Ethical Considerations Around Psychedelic Therapy in Illinois?
Clinical trials have shown positive results with Ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin. However, Chicago-based therapists must also consider the legal and ethical questions this will likely raise. Many people want to engage with these substances in a way that will benefit them.
With the exception of Ketamine in very specific contexts, most hallucinogens are illegal to purchase and possess. This leaves clinicians with the challenge of finding a balance between encouraging illegal and potentially dangerous behavior and discouraging it in a way that doesn’t cause shame.
As a social worker, it is also part of my code of ethics to advocate for clients’ access to supportive resources. It is my passion to help clients find a safe, legal, and ethical way to reap the benefits of psychedelic treatments
The Difference Between Clinical Research and Underground Therapy
One of the most obvious dilemmas is the significant difference between monitored research trials and individuals or clinicians who decide to use these drugs therapeutically without additional oversight. In most research settings, the participants undergo significant evaluations to determine their overall health and their history with drugs. They typically have medical staff on standby in case someone experiences complications, and they have a secure environment to keep individuals safe.
When you engage with these substances outside of a more controlled environment, these risks increase, and many people are afraid to seek help because of potential legal consequences.
Harm Reduction Approaches Support Safer Psychedelic Experiences
The middle ground we have found at Grow with Flo Counseling is to support individuals by offering Ketamine assisted therapy, psychedelic preparation and integration, as well as harm-reduction.
I understand that you may choose to use psychedelics therapeutically outside of a controlled or clinical environment, regardless of legal or social expectations. Therefore, I choose to do what I can to help you minimize risks both preventively and after the fact.
Psychoeducation
One of the ways I try to support my clients is to provide psychoeducation about the use of psychedelics. This typically includes topics such as understanding your many options for working with psychedelics, answering questions, demystifying the process, and sharing supportive resources.
Psychoeducation may also mean helping you identify traits that may be contraindications to a healthy psychedelic experience. For example, some mental health diagnoses, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, need further and careful consultation in order to avoid worsening of symptoms.
Additionally, other medical diagnoses or medications may make the experience more dangerous by exacerbating symptoms or interacting dangerously with other medications.
Understanding Dosage, Set, and Setting
Like most things we put in our bodies, one of the primary factors of the medicinal or therapeutic effects of psychedelics is dosage. Part of what I address in psychoeducation is helping clients understand the role of dosage, referring clients to a prescriber who can assess the proper dosage, and the importance of using a reputable source.
Additionally, I can work with you to cultivate a mindset and curate a setting that can support the most therapeutic benefit. This may include discussing your intentions, managing expectations, and preparing to work with challenging experiences. I may also refer you to an experienced guide who can sit with you in the experience.
The Importance of Preparation and Integration Support in Andersonville Psychedelic Therapy
Thoughtful and intentional preparation is an integral component of harm reduction in the use of psychedelics. Part of this is identifying a trusted individual to sit with you through your experience. Preparing a space where you feel safe and supported can dramatically improve the quality of your experience, and having a trusted individual can help keep you safe if you begin engaging in unexpected or risky behaviors.
These steps are often the key difference between recreational and therapeutic use that can provide mental health benefits. When you properly prepare, you can learn to work with these medicines in a way that yields more positive results.
Reducing the Risk of Emotional Distress or Trauma
While hallucinogens like Molly (MDMA) or Mushrooms (psilocybin) have been shown to help individuals trying to manage negative emotions, including PTSD, they may also leave you with lingering emotional distress or bring up feelings related to previous trauma. This is where Psychedelic Integration Therapy (PIT) can come in to help you process those feelings and make sense of your experience.
Many times, individuals are able to take these feelings from the experience and use them to work through previous negative experiences, but without the appropriate guidance or help, it can often lead to ongoing distress.

Some people report experiencing sleep disruptions, increased anxiety, and a general sense of unease in the days following a psychedelic experience. It can be helpful to take time to process these feelings with a trained clinical provider.
What PIT or Ketamine Therapy in Andersonville May Look Like
If you are looking for support in a safer and more therapeutically beneficial experience, we offer several models that may be appropriate for you. Among these is psychedelic group therapy, which allows small groups of individuals to process their experience, identify patterns, and begin to establish behavioral change and a better understanding of themselves. All of these sessions are under the supervision and guidance of a licensed clinician from Grow With Flo Counseling.
In addition to psychedelic group therapy, we have Ketamine therapy in Andersonville, including Ketamine group therapy. Ketamine assisted therapy is currently legal in Illinois, and as a Ketamine therapy provider, I can refer you to reputable prescribers, help you prepare for your experience, sit with you during your Ketamine journey, and help you make sense of what happened.
The Role of Somatic Therapy in Andersonville Psychadelic Integration Services
The use of psychedelics is oftentimes a very sensory experience. When we consider that, along with the way our bodies can store and remember trauma, the need for interventions that help the brain and body connect becomes clear.
Many psychedelics do an excellent job of inhibiting some of our common defenses and our sense of self (ego dissolution). This means you may find that past experiences or unresolved feelings come to the surface more readily. The use of psychedelics is oftentimes a very sensory experience. When we consider that, along with understanding how our bodies can store and remember trauma, the need for intervention that addresses how the brain and body connect becomes clear.
Somatic therapy in Andersonville or the North Chicago area can include the techniques described above, as well as integrating other styles of therapy based on what you need, such as mindfulness, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Integration Training, and trauma-focused techniques.
